As promised, I am debuting my Korean Drama reviews with a series that I just started watching last week. I planned to have either Full House or Coffee Prince to grace this first time post but this drama is so fantastic that I can't bear the thought of not writing about it. I just finished watching Episode 7 earlier and I am so inspired because of its overall beauty.
This is about Go Mi Nyul, a nun who has a twin brother named Go Mi Nam that was hired by a top management company who has the group ANJELL as their stars. She was summoned to take the place of her brother for the meantime because of an injury. She didn't want to do it but she was persuaded by her brother's manager that the reason why Mi Nam pursued a singing career is for him to find their mother who abandoned them years before. Thus began her adventures with the band. She didn't only experience difficulty in managing to conceal her identity to all members but also her feelings for the leader, Hwang Tae Kyung. I don't want to give any spoilers with this review but the bottom line is this: This drama gave me the satisfaction that I felt when I watched Rain and Song Hye Kyo in the infamous Full House.
The characters are genuine in their portrayals even if some of them are first time actors. I am very impressed with Jang Geun Seok ( Hwang Tae Kyung ) on how he dispalyed indifference and caring attitude at the same time. This is the first time that I watched him in a series and I was surprised when I found out that he starred in various dramas and movies before. He have diversed roles ranging from a band singer to a murderer. He achieved so much at the tender age of 22. I found out that he wants to star in the Boys Over Flowers series as Ji Hoo but the role was given to Kim Hyun Joong of the band ss501. He did justice to that but it will be great if JGS got the role. It will be interesting to watch since Ji Hoo's character is gentle whereas he is very arrogant in this drama.
His female counterpart, Park Shin Hye is outstanding as well in playing a would be nun torn apart with her feelings and his brother's dream. Although not as great as Yoon Eun Hye when she also played a girl who needs to pretend to be a guy in order to earn a living in Coffee Prince, she delivered good acting abilities. She has a good singing voice too. The way she conceals her love is heartbreaking and its poignant enough to make me say Awww when I was watching. I learned that she played the young female lead (Choi Ji Woo played the adult version) in Stairway to Heaven as well.
Jung Yong Hwa played Kang Shin Woo, a fellow band member who is also falling for Park Shin Hye's character. It was not openly implied in the drama ( which I like) that he knew that she's a girl but such scenes like him buying shoes for her after sensing that she was admiring a pair while watching a video and him trailing her while exploring a certain city really hits a spot. His sincerity for a supposed unrequited love is so endearing that I sometimes found myself rooting for him. I know what it feels like to have a one sided love and its never romantic, just tragic. He is also the leader of CNBLUE, a band in his home country.
Lee Hong Ki is Jeremy, the funny member of the group. He had issues with Go Mi Nam before but he like him the instant that he knew the issue with her parentage. His comedic performance is outstanding and I love the way he cares for Park's character and then checking himself if he is gay because he seems to be caring too much.
Director Hong Sung Chang and screenwriters Hong Jung Eun and Hong Mi Ran outdid themeselves with this production alongside the equally amazing casts. They know how to do angles that will not only be appreciated by the viewers but also heightened the emotions of the scene. The dialogues are very unique and again, symbolism ( stars and shoes) abound in the course of the drama. The idol dorm is very realistic in its appearance and even the set is decorated impressively. They made me realized that even famous actors or performers, however sheltered or cool they seem to be, are only human beings experiencing the same issues as normal individuals. Heartbreaks are never out of the question, choices are inevitable and determination to succeed while disregarding your dreams should be taken into consideration.
I have just watched Episode 7 and I am so hooked that I want to finish it right away. I know that this will be shown in ABS-CBN soon and I hope that the cast and crew will come here to promote the show. I'll be there in their live performance for sure.:) Watch this and see for yourselves. This will be a great start if you're not into Koreanovelas.
